June 12, Tuesday

Wow, another full day of wonders and good times.  This morning we got in our dependable, little blue Saturn and headed up hwy 16 and 385 to Deadwood, SD.  This was a pretty easy drive of approximately 48 miles thru ponderosa pines and small ranches.  We arrived in Deadwood and found a parking garage and proceeded to locate Saloon number10, which according to legend is where Wild Bill Hickok was murdered by a gunshot to the back of the head, while playing poker, holding the infamous aces and eights hand.  I found the saloon and while the exact table was long gone, the location was close to the fire place and they have the chair he was seated in, on display above the door.  Down Main Street about a block and across the street is a sign where his murderer was captured.  A little further up the street is a casino called Midnight Star, this is Kevin Costner's casino.  Inside are several items used in several of his movies,ie: the shabby clothes from Water World, an Elvis suit from 3000 miles to Graceland and the Coast Guard rescue suit from the Guardian and several more.  We drove to Mt. Moria Cemetery, where Wild Bill is buried and beside him, at her request is Calamity Jane.  We left Deadwood after visiting a few more casinos (80+ really?) and drove the few miles to Sturgis, ND.  I just wanted to see the sight that beckons so many motorcycle riders, yearly, to complete a pilgrimage here.  This year the monster gathering will be in August.  We drove out to the central location, a pasture with the name of  "The Buffalo Chip".  Leaving there we drove to downtown Sturgis and looked at the Main Street that will be closed to auto traffic and home to thousands of motorcycles for two weeks.  These events took most of the day and we returned to camp very tired and assured that we had met our objectives.  Tomorrow is check list day and making sure we will be able to pull out Thursday and head for Yellowstone.  More tomorrow.
